Comparing
US & Asia

Comparing US and Asia Fertility Options

Treatment in the US or in Asia? This is a common question that our clients ask.

BabySun FC offers both streams of fertility solutions and can help you make an informed decision that fits your family’s needs.

In this article, we will compare these two major fertility regions.

Cost is one of the biggest considerations and is arguably one of the larger differences between the two streams.

Citizenship is also a factor as the US is one of the few countries that allow a child to receive citizenship upon birth. However, the global opinion on the value of US citizenship has fluctuated and it continues to be a debatable topic.

Other dependent topics include medical technology, duration and societal factors.

Citizenship

The value of certain types of citizenship is a highly debatable topic. It is influenced by a variety of personal factors such family, lifestyle, socioeconomic level, education, health, career interests and personality.
However, as an upcoming parent, it is worth considering as the US is one of the few places whereby being born on US soil automatically grants US citizenship, regardless of your own citizenship. This legal principle is named Jus Soli, right of the soil. This is opposed to most Asian countries where citizenship is commonly tied to the citizenship of the parents.

Through surrogacy, you may have the ability provide a different national identity for your child.

Passport

US citizens currently hold one of the most powerful passports in the world, ranked within the top 10 under the Henley Passport Index. Allowing your future child to travel to over 180 countries visa-free.

Economic Power

The US has always presented itself as a land of opportunity. The US market itself is one of the largest in the word and has an unsatiable thirst for innovation and marketing brilliance. It is backed by strong international trade, being a major importer and exporter of goods and services which results in strong GDP performance compared to many other countries.
New York will always remain a key financial center city (along with London and Hong Kong) with itself being home to the first and second largest stock exchanges in the world; NYSE and NASDAQ.

Education

Considering fertility should also mean that it’s time to start evaluating education options for your future child. With over 25 universities ranked within the top 100 of the 2025 QS World University Rankings, the US provides many opportunities for academic success.
However, it is worth noting that failure to be granted scholarships means that your child would also be burdened with relatively high tuition fees, on average, second in the world to England. Along with high tuition fees, the country is notorious for cut-throat student loan programs.

Global Tax

Unfortunately, this is one of the leading reasons as to why ex-US citizens have chosen to renounce their US citizenship. US citizens are required to declare and pay tax on their worldwide income. Even if your child decides to never start a career in the US, and their earnings are solely from other countries, they are still required to file US tax returns. They may also need to pay double taxes, one to the local country, one to the US. This may be especially frustrating as the US tax system is a convoluted setup with multiple forms and many different types of taxes that all need to be addressed every year financial year.

Foreign Parent Deportation

Most recently, the US has come under the spotlight for their brutal deportation efforts and restrictions of entry for foreign individuals. There have been increasing cases of foreign parents being barred entry or deported from their US citizen child. Resulting in family separation and the child being forced into the foster care system. Your parental rights may also be at risk of termination if the child has been out of the parents’ care for 15 of the past 22 months.

Surrogate System

On the topic of fertility, there are a number of differences between US surrogate mothers compared to surrogates from other countries.

Notably, the biggest difference is cost, where the sole cost of a US surrogate mother is likely to exceed the cost of an entire fertility program elsewhere.

The US surrogacy laws are commonly governed on the state-level with a number of states having laws that make surrogacy difficult and states such as California where surrogacy protection is highly valued.

Differences in Prenatal Care

A difference between US surrogacy programs and many that are offered elsewhere is prenatal care. Prenatal care are the services for the pregnant woman up until birth.

In many Asian countries, surrogates commonly come from humble backgrounds, often from rural farming-based communities. Their families are often quiet and simple, but with active lifestyles. Commonly, the community would have women who would introduce their neighboring girlfriends into participating surrogacy.

Upon becoming a surrogate mother, they are offered the choice to take up residence in an assisted living complex where they are provided with all necessities such as diet, personal care products and allowances. On-call care is also arranged to ensure that they can relax and have an enjoyable pregnancy. The great majority, if not all, would choose to live in the care facility as it commonly offers more than staying in their own homes.

This is opposed to surrogacy programs in the US where it is common for the surrogate to live in their own home. Granted, in the context of the US, many would agree that living in their own home for the pregnancy period would be preferred and provides increased mental comfort.

Common practice involves signing a lifestyle-restriction agreement, barring the surrogate from partaking in activities that may affect the health of the child; smoking, drinking, the use of substances and extreme physical activity. However, there are some instances where the surrogate, especially those from a lower socioeconomic status, willingly chooses to ignore the guidelines. Reasons may be that

      1. The barred products are easily accessible.
      2. They are bored and it is their common pastime. Breaking habits are difficult.
      3. They are not caring for their own child and therefore have little repercussions.
      4. Living within the privacy of their own home means the lack of surveillance.
      5. Social pressure from others living in the same home.

Regardless of the reasons, BabySun FC are aware of the reality of the situation. We strive to take precautionary steps to ensure that your child’s development is protected.
